Additional Information on
Frances Brandon, The Marchioness of Dorset (1517-1559)

Frances Brandon was married in 1534 to the Marquess of Dorset who had first sought the approval of Henry VIII. She was the mother of Lady Jane Grey and daughter of the marriage for love between Henry VIII's favourite sister Mary, and the 1st Duke of Suffolk. Her husband was weak but ambitious and supported the Duke of Northumberland in his attempts to make her daughter, Lady Jane Grey, Queen in 1553. After being pardoned by Queen Mary when he abandoned the other plotters, he opposed the Queen's plans to marry Philip of Spain and was executed after the failure of Sir Thomas Wyatt's rebellion in 1554.
