Designed by E.M. Barry, second son of Sir Charles Barry, the architect of the new Place of Westminster, and completed around 1860, the throne has its back embroidered in gold thread. Behind it is a large needlework panel, embroidered with the Royal Arms by the Royal College of Needlework, and above that a gilded wooden canopy, carved with the emblems of the Rose of England, the Thistle of Scotland and the Shamrock of Ireland, together with VR for Victoria Regina.
