The ceiling is divided into eighteen compartments, replete with national and royal emblems. In 1980 an ornamental boss fell during a sitting. The ceiling had seriously deteriorated, largely because of the heat of the gas lights which had formerly illuminated the chamber. Repairs were completed in 1984. The running motto in gold letters 'Dieu et mon droit' conceal, as elsewhere in the Palace of Westminster, ventilation vents.
