String Course [ Play
Narrated and Animated Movie ! ] Interspersed along the string course are these Corbels displaying the shields of Richard II alternating with those of his royal predecessor, Edward the Confessor.
The string course is carved with the White Hart Chained and Gorged (that is, chained by the throat), which was the personal badge of Richard II. This is alternated with the royal crest and helm of the Plantagenet kings. The carving was done by two Gloucestershire masons, Swallow and Washbourne, at a price of one shilling per foot.
