Beneath the side galleries runs a frieze containing the painted armorial bearings of the sovereigns from Edward III, and of the Lords Chancellor of England from 1377. Beneath the Strangers' Gallery the shields are those of various bishoprics and archbishoprics, and the arms of the Royal Houses from Saxon to Hanoverian times.
